Co-ops

I keep hearing about Co-ops on the news. Co-op, for those who don't know is short for cooperative.

This is being pushed as a solution for Health INSURANCE prices, and I emphasize the word INSURANCE in this because these lefty's keep going on TV saying that "47 million people don't have healthcare." That's non-sense. They do have access to healthcare. What they might be lacking is Health INSURANCE.

Anyway, you've read my past blogs. You know what my solution to the "healthcare crisis" is.

But my beef is with this idea that Co-Ops are gonna lower the price of INSURANCE. That's non-sense. It won't. I absolutely won't and I'll tell you why. The reason Health Insurance is "high" (and high is relative to the individual), is not because we're not purchasing in groups but because we use our insurance policy for every little thing.

How many of you reading this have been to the doctor in the past two years or so for a routine visit or a visit for just a "I haven't been feeling good the past couple days?" How many of you? NOW, tell me this: Did you pay the $60 for a visit without insurance? OR did you pay the co-pay on your insurance?

I bet most of you don't even know that a standard doctor's office visit (In Texas, anyway) without insurance is about $60. You're telling me you couldn't have just used the money in your flexible spending account at work?

IMAGINE: You have a car, and it's time to get a transmission fluid flush. And let's say it costs $180. Ok, so let's say your car insurance was such that you could have GEICO pay for the flush and you just pay something like a $35 co-pay for a mechanic shop visit. Can you imagine how much car insurance would cost if our car maintenance system was like that? And you'd just go out and get everything done on your car as often as you felt like cuz you weren't having to realize the true cost of things like brake jobs and transmission fluid flushes. And then imagine if you got your car insurance through your work as a group plan. You'd really not know how much things cost then.
